Round 7 results from the African countries at Batumi Chess Olympiad 2018, Klaasen snipes off a GM

The highlights of Round 7 at the 43rd Chess Olympiad in Batumi were the following results:
South African Calvin Klaasen defeating a Grandmaster in their match against Turkey. Klaasen was the only player to win in that match. His compatriots all lost.

Sydney Mukumbo of Zambia had this to say about Klaasen’s game: FM Kalassen 2262 win against GM Dastan Batun 2569 can not go without the needed praise. FM Klaaasen’s performance at the Olympiads has been in top form,so far with 4.5 point with only one lose to Grand Master Skoberne and recorded a draw.
It should be noted that GM Dastan had a perfect score at the Olympaids until he met the might of FM Klassen’s wrath. As Africa our great congratulations are in order for this great chess wizz, and we can only wish him all the best in today’s game and the upcoming ones.

Here is the game:

Grandmaster Bassem Amin drew against Indian Super Grandmaster Vishwanathan Anand in the match between Egypt and India. India won that match 2.5 – 1.5.

Here is the game:

International Master (IM) Andrew Kayonde also drew against a grandmaster in his match.

Here is the game:

Botswana beats Faroe Islands

Botswana overcame the higher rated Faroe Islands. On all the boards Botswana were the lower rated and I don’t believe that anyone expected them to win their match but they did with a 2.5 -1.5 score.

Somalia has the better of Mauritius

Except for the top board where Somalia had a higher rating, Mauritius was higher rated in all the other boards. Somalia won the match 2.5-1.5.

Malawi draws against Jordan

Malawi did well to draw Jordan 2-2 in their match. On paper very few people would have given the Malawi team any chances against Jordan but the team gave a very good account of themselves.

Below are the results from all the matches involving African countries.
