Every September, a new generation of young chess players gather with the same dream; to prove that they belong among Nigeria’s brightest talents. Some arrive hoping to make their first mark on the national stage, while others return determined to finish what they started a year earlier.
For every participant, the Smashing Gambit Tournament represents far more than a competition; it is an opportunity to test their preparation, challenge themselves against the country’s finest young minds, and perhaps begin a journey towards becoming one of Nigeria’s future chess stars, and that journey resumes once again in September 2026 as the Smashing Gambit Tournament returns for its fifth edition.
In just four years, the championship has evolved into one of Nigeria’s most respected youth chess events. More than simply crowning winners, it has become a platform where potential is discovered, resilience is rewarded, and future champions are shaped. Several players who first made headlines at Smashing Gambit have gone on to establish themselves as rising stars, while others have returned year after year, turning earlier disappointments into memorable championship victories.
The tournament’s story began in 2022 with competitions in the Under-22, Under-16 and Under-10 categories. Eyetonghan Denyefa Callistus became the first Under-22 Open champion, while Onoja Iyefu Joy claimed the girls’ title. Mufutau Waris John captured the Under-16 Open crown, Everestus Joy topped the Under-16 Girls category, Michelle Chiamaka Nwankwo won the Under-10 Open title, and Adepoju Anuoluwayimika emerged victorious among the girls. Together, they became the first names to be etched into the tournament’s history.
The second edition in 2023 demonstrated that Smashing Gambit was no one-off success. Isaac Chukwudalu Okeke lifted the Under-22 Open trophy, Miracle Obiamakachukwu Agbazue announced herself by winning the Under-22 Girls title, while Mufutau Waris John successfully defended his Under-16 Open championship to become the tournament’s first repeat winner. Adepoju Anuoluwayimika added another title to her growing résumé by winning the Under-16 Girls section after previously claiming the title of best Under-10 Girls in the maiden edition. Kevin Chimaobi Agusionu emerged as the Under-10 Open champion, while Divine Dafiewharen completed the list of winners in the Under-10 Girls division.
Due to the amazing feedbacks, the tournament entered a new phase in 2024 with a new conducive venue, the introduction of the Under-20 and Under-12 categories, as well as the inclusion of trophies and medals, reflecting the event’s continued evolution. Patrick Onyeka Uriah claimed the inaugural Under-20 Open title, while Miracle Obiamakachukwu Agbazue successfully defended her girls’ championship in the new Under-20 category. Fawaz Oduola completed an inspiring rise from a podium finisher in the inaugural edition to Under-16 Open champion, while Michelle Chiamaka Nwankwo added another Smashing Gambit title by winning the Under-16 Girls event after her earlier Under-10 Open triumph. Gabrielle Odion Unuigboje and Zita Adaeze Agusionu became the first champions in the newly introduced Under-12 Open and Girls categories.
By the fourth edition in 2025, another generation of champions had emerged. Kingsley Osayande won the Under-20 Open championship, while Merrilyn Patrick improved on her 3rd place finish from the previous year to capture the Under-20 Girls title. Vim Bolayo Adewumi and Stephanie Igwe claimed the Under-16 Open and Girls crowns respectively, while Gabrielle Odion Unuigboje successfully defended her Under-12 Open title to become another multiple-time Smashing Gambit champion. Oghenemarho Mueller rounded off the list of champions with victory in the Under-12 Girls section.
Across four (4) editions, Sapo’o Chess Essentials Ltd, through Smashing Gambit, has produced remarkable stories of growth, resilience and consistency. Champions such as Mufutau Waris John, Miracle Obiamakachukwu Agbazue and Gabrielle Odion Unuigboje have each won multiple titles, while players including Michelle Chiamaka Nwankwo, Adepoju Anuoluwayimika, Fawaz Oduola and Merrilyn Patrick have demonstrated how perseverance and continuous improvement can transform promising youngsters into champions.
Now, The Stage is Set for The Fifth Edition.
