In the heart of Kubwa, a bustling district in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory, a boy was born to the Nyuima family. Migrants from Benue State, the Nyuimas had moved to Abuja with dreams of a better life. Like many families, they worked tirelessly to make ends meet, living simply and nurturing hope for a brighter future. Unbeknownst to them, their young son, Ferdinand, would someday become a symbol of resilience and excellence.

Ferdinand’s early years were unremarkable to most, filled with the rhythm of a modest childhood in Abuja. But even in those formative years, his quiet demeanor and thoughtful nature hinted at a depth beyond his years. It was not until he turned eleven (11) that fate intervened, setting him on a path that would change his life forever.

It was then, that Coach Eluekezi Chukwuwikeh, known as Chucks, entered his life. A man with a sharp eye for talent and a heart for mentoring, Chucks noticed something extraordinary in Ferdinand — a view of chess beyond his years. In Ferdinand, Chucks saw not just a student but a diamond in the rough, waiting to be polished.

Chucks took the young boy under his wing, teaching him not just the moves of the game but the philosophy behind it — the discipline, strategy, and patience required to succeed. He did not merely instruct; he inspired. For Ferdinand, chess became more than a game. It was a lifeline, a source of hope in a world often fraught with challenges.

Recognizing the limitations of Ferdinand’s circumstances, Chucks made a bold decision. He took Ferdinand into his care, believing that the boy’s potential needed focused attention and stability to flourish. This was no small sacrifice. Chucks not only provided rigorous training but also ensured that Ferdinand’s basic needs — food, shelter, and mentorship — were met.

Years later, when Chucks relocated to Lagos, he refused to leave Ferdinand behind. He negotiated with the boy’s family, explaining that Lagos offered greater opportunities for growth. Convinced by his unwavering belief in Ferdinand’s potential, the family agreed. In Lagos, Ferdinand found himself in a new environment, far from the familiarity of Abuja. It was a test of his resilience, but he rose to the challenge.

Ferdinand’s journey was not without its struggles. Quiet, humble, and reserved, he faced challenges that would have broken many. The road to greatness was paved with sacrifices, but Ferdinand remained steadfast, drawing strength from the game he loved. By 2023, his dedication began to bear fruit in the top cadre of the game.

At just 16 years old, Ferdinand qualified for the Nigeria National Chess Championship, an achievement that marked him as one of the nation’s rising stars. The championship, organized by the prestigious Orchid-Lekki Chess Club, was a proving ground for Nigeria’s best players. Ferdinand’s performance was commendable, though many believed he could achieve even more.

Babatunde Ogunsiku – CEO, Africa Chess Media

In May 2024, a pivotal figure took over the affairs of Ferdinand’s life. Ogunsiku Babatunde, a visionary manager with a passion for nurturing talent and developing the game of chess, took over the management of Ferdinand’s career. Babatunde’s involvement marked a turning point, opening doors that Ferdinand could scarcely have imagined.

Under Babatunde’s guidance, Ferdinand received a full scholarship to complete his secondary education at Platform School, a beacon of academic and sporting excellence. At Platform School, Ferdinand found not just an education but a home. Dr. and Mrs. Obe, the school’s owners, treated him like family, ensuring that he no longer had to worry about life’s basic necessities.

For Ferdinand, this was more than an opportunity; it was a sanctuary. With his newfound stability, he focused entirely on honing his craft as well as his education. His hard work paid off in September 2024, when he achieved a major breakthrough.

Competing in the Chief Ephraim Tournament, Ferdinand claimed his first Open Classical Tournament victory (on tiebreaks), defeating several of Nigeria’s top players in the process.

Buoyed by this triumph, Ferdinand entered the 2024 Nigeria National Chess Championship Invitational Section as the highest-rated junior player (U20). The tournament, held at the Orchid Hotel in Lagos, was a battleground for the nation’s best.

Ferdinand’s journey through the championship was anything but smooth. His campaign began with a tough loss against Okemakinde Toluwanimi, a game he had dominated for most of the match before faltering. Undeterred, Ferdinand bounced back, winning a series of games and holding his own against formidable opponents like International Master Aikhoje Odion, before being held to a draw by Candidate Master Benjamin Omorere.

However, the championship’s most dramatic moments came in its final rounds. Ferdinand faced International Master (IM) Balogun Oluwafemi, a seasoned competitor who had finished as runner-up in the last two editions of the championship. Despite outplaying Balogun for much of their match, Ferdinand ultimately succumbed to the IM’s resilience and skill.

The tournament’s penultimate rounds saw FIDE Master Akintoye Abdulrahman Abdulraheem (Triple A) take the lead, edging ahead of Ferdinand, IM Balogun, and FM Eyetonghan Callistus Denyefa by just half a point. Everything came down to the final round, and the stakes could not have been higher.

In a twist of fate, Triple A was held to a draw by his comrade, while IM Balogun suffered a huge defeat at the hands of IM Aikhoje Odion. Meanwhile, Ferdinand delivered against FM Callistus in a decisive victory. This set the stage for an epic playoff between Ferdinand and Triple A, with the National Championship title on the line.

The playoff began with Triple A taking the first game, leaving Ferdinand needing a win in the second to force a tiebreaker. Rising to the occasion, Ferdinand struck back, delivering a thrilling victory that had the crowd on their feet. The final showdown came in the form of an Armageddon match.

In this high-stakes format, Ferdinand played with the white pieces, starting with five (5) minutes on the clock and needing a win to claim the title. Triple A, with the black pieces and four (4) minutes, only needed a draw. What followed was a display of composure and brilliance. Ferdinand played with the understanding and calmness of a seasoned world champion, outmaneuvering his opponent to secure the victory.

The Champ is Here!

At just 17 years old, Ferdinand was crowned Nigeria’s National Chess Champion. His triumph earned him the championship trophy, a cash prize, and an all-expenses-paid trip to the 2025 Africa Chess Championships. But more than that, it solidified his place as a rising star in the world of chess.

Ferdinand’s journey is far from over. To achieve his ultimate goal of becoming a Grandmaster — a title that has eluded all of West Africa — he will need to compete in more international tournaments, gaining the experience and exposure necessary to climb the ranks and earn the title.
